“One by one, the fields are being built over”

The farmers of Naxos are pressured by overtourism, which consumes more and more water resources and expands through construction. Can a balance be found? “K” spoke with all sides of the local community.

The new generation

The change happening in Naxos’s economy seems to be structural. Antonis Sergis and Angeliki Gratsia are two of the winemakers who in recent years have started working to restore the Naxian vineyard. “This year, one in three planted potatoes compared to before. When drought is constant, many abandon the sector,” says Mr. Sergis. “But there is an important change: producers are fewer, but they cultivate larger areas or raise more animals.”
